Marco Roque de Freitas is an ethnomusicologist, Assistant Professor (Tenure) in the Department of Musical Sciences at NOVA FCSH, and an integrated researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) at NOVA University Lisbon, where he co-coordinates the thematic line Studies on Women, Gender and Sexuality. His theoretical interests focus on the following topics:
- Nation-building and nationalism in postcolonial Africa;
- Expressive behaviour, gender and sexuality;
- Expressive culture and memory politics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira;
- Popular music and the study of music industries;
- Music, propaganda and conflict;
- Musical theatre, voice and ‘racial imagination’;
