Marco Roque de Freitas is an ethnomusicologist, Assistant Professor (Tenure) in the Department of Musical Sciences at NOVA FCSH, and an integrated researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) at NOVA University Lisbon, where he co-coordinates the thematic line Studies on Women, Gender and Sexuality. His theoretical interests focus on the following topics:

  • Nation-building and nationalism in postcolonial Africa;
  • Expressive behaviour, gender and sexuality;
  • Expressive culture and memory politics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira;
  • Popular music and the study of music industries;
  • Music, propaganda and conflict;
  • Musical theatre, voice and ‘racial imagination’;
  • Digital humanities and research infrastructures;
  • Research Ethics and History of Ethnomusicology
