Simpósio New Voices in Portuguese Translation Studies VI
Entre os dias 16 e 17 de fevereiro, a NOVA FCSH acolhe a sexta edição do simpósio New Voices in Portuguese Translation Studies, desenhado para oferecer uma plataforma onde os alunos dos Estudos da Tradução possam desenvolver as suas competências de apresentação num ambiente seguro.
A conferência, organizada pelo CETAPS, insere-se numa iniciativa mais vasta de desenvolvimento dos Estudos da Tradução em Portugal, oferecendo um quadro de apoio a jovens investigadores que pretendam seguir carreira na área.
Esta, receberá 42 jovens investigadores nacionais e internacionais que se debruçarão sobre temas como estudos descritivos de traduções literárias realizadas em diferentes épocas e lugares; tradução técnica e tecnologia de tradução; tradução audiovisual e jogos de vídeo.
O programa incluirá uma palestra principal da Professora Lynne Bowker, da Universidade de Ottawa, uma investigadora de renome mundial conhecida pelo seu trabalho em tecnologias de tradução, no dia 16 de fevereiro, com o tema Machine Translation Literacy: What is it? Why do we need it? How do we do it?. Nesta, serão exploradas diferentes facetas da literacia em MT e formas de ajudar diferentes utilizadores (não necessáriamente da área da Tradução) a melhorar a sua navegação.
Em 2020, Lynne Bowker foi eleita membro da Royal Society of Canada em reconhecimento da sua pesquisa em tecnologias de tradução. As suas publicações incluem Computer-Aided Translation Technology (2002), Working with Specialized Language: A Practical Guide to Using Corpora (2002), Machine Translation and Global Research (2019) e De-mistifying Translation: Introducing Translation to Non-translators (brevemente em acesso aberto).

Between the 16th and 17th of February, NOVA FCSH welcomes the sixth edition of the graduate symposium, New Voices in Portuguese Translation Studies, designed to offer a platform where students of Translation Studies can develop their presentation skills in a safe environment.
The conference, organized by CETAPS, is part of a broader initiative to develop Translation Studies in Portugal by offering a support framework for young researchers who might wish to go on to pursue a career in the field.
It will welcome 42 young researchers from around Portugal and beyond, who will be speaking, in English and in Portuguese, on a range of translation-related issues. Subjects include descriptive studies of literary translations done in different times and places; technical translation and translation technology; audiovisual translation and video games; multilingualism and hybridity; and translator studies.
The programme will include a Keynote Lecture by Professor Lynne Bowker of the University of Ottawa, a world-renowned scholar known especially for her work on translation technologies, on February 16, which will discuss “Machine Translation Literacy: What is it? Why do we need it? How do we do it?”. This talk will explore some different facets of MT literacy and suggest ways to help different users (not necessarily from a Translation background) improve their own MT literacy.
In 2020, Lynne Bowker was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of her research on translation technologies. Her publications include Computer-Aided Translation Technology (2002), Working with Specialized Language: A Practical Guide to Using Corpora (2002), Machine Translation and Global Research (2019), and De-mystifying Translation: Introducing Translation to Non-translators (forthcoming in February 2023 in open access format).
Anyone is welcome to attend this conference and participate in the debate sessions following each paper. Those that register in advance will have the right to a certificate of attendance.
