Queen Elizabeth II: Life, Times, Legacies
O reinado da falecida rainha Isabel II (1952-2022) foi o mais longo da história da monarquia britânica. Devido, sem dúvida, à sua duração excecional, o reinado de setenta anos testemunhou acontecimentos marcantes com consequências de grande alcance, tais como o fim do Império; o declínio da Grã-Bretanha na cena política internacional; os “problemas” e a agitação no seio das Ilhas Britânicas e a perspetiva de um Reino Desunido; a emergência e consolidação das culturas populares e juvenis e a relação entre a Coroa e os meios de comunicação social, para citar apenas alguns. O período é também de particular interesse para os Estudos Anglo-Portugueses, pois levanta questões como as relações políticas entre os dois mais antigos aliados durante o regime Salazar/Caetano, as visitas oficiais, o impacto da II Guerra Mundial, a descolonização, a Revolução de 25 de abril de 1974, entre outras.
The reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022) was the longest so far in the history of the British monarchy. Partly due, without doubt, to its exceptional duration, her seventy-year reign witnessed momentous events with far-reaching consequences, such as the end of the Empire; the decline of Britain on the international political scene; the ‘troubles’ and unrest within the British Isles and the prospect of a DisUnited Kingdom; the emergence and consolidation of popular and youth cultures and the relationship between the Crown and the media, to name but a few. The period is also of particular interest for Anglo-Portuguese Studies, as it raises issues such as the political relations between the two oldest allies during the Salazar/Caetano regime, the official visits, the impact of World War II, decolonisation, and the Revolution of the 25th April 1974, amongst others.
