TRAINING SESSION: CATALOGUES AND DATABASES
(SCHEDULE DATES YET TO BE DEFINED)

  • Duration: 1 h.
  • Target public: undergraduate and Master students.
  • Pre-requisites: non-applicable. It is recommended that the Users configure their browser to access NOVA FCSH proxy server (Instructions here).
  • Minimum / Maximum of participants: 10 to 20.

General goals: the general purpose of this training session is to provide the participants with necessary skills to achieve greater proficiency and autonomy in searching information, whether in online bibliographic catalogues or databases, through NOVA Discovery – the content aggregator of NOVA University of Lisbon.

Specific goals: By the end of the training session, Users should be capable of:

  • Consider information by distinguishing their relevance to their necessities;
  • Understanding, planning and applying search strategies;
  • Correctly locate and handle sources, resources and tools;
  • Using digital platforms autonomously.

Contents:

  • Defining information search and retrieval strategies;
  • Presentation and handling of NOVA FCSH Catalogue and NOVA Discovery;
  • Instructions on how to access Nova Discovery, especially directed to full text of scientific publications;
  • Presentation of various other catalogues;
  • Interpretation of bibliographical records, downloading of items and handling of support auxiliary tools (citations, permalinks, etc.)

 

TRAINING SESSION: PLAGIARISM AND CITATION
(SCHEDULE DATES YET TO BE DEFINED)

  • Duration: 1 h.
  • Target public:  undergraduate students.
  • Pre-requisites: non applicable. It is recommended that the Users configure their browser to access NOVA FCSH proxy server (Instructions here)
  • Minimum / Maximum of participants: 10 to 20.

General goals: the purpose of this training session is to promote awareness among students for plagiarism and to provide tools to counter it.

Specific goals: By the end of the training session, Users should be capable of:

  • Knowing what plagiarism is;
  • Mastering tools and strategies to counteract plagiarism.

Contents:

  • Using general sources and general bibliographies;
  • Presentation of various types of citations and abbreviations.
  • Practical cases using bibliographic norms.
  • Code of Copyright and Related Rights.

TRAINING SESSION: INTRODUCTION TO MENDELEY
(SCHEDULE DATES YET TO BE DEFINED)

  • Duration: 2 h.
  • Target public: undergraduate, post-graduate and PhD students.
  • Pre-requisites: Installation of Mendeley Desktop. It is also recommendable the installation of Google Chrome.
    Minimum / Maximum of participants: 10 to 20.

General goals: the general purpose of this training session is to ensure that the Users can handle Mendeley as a management tool for their personal research and as support for citations and building bibliographic references.

Specific goals: By the end of the training session, Users should be capable of:

  • Creating a Mendeley Reference library;
  • Making citations and bibliographies directly into your chosen text editor, using Mendeley’s plugin.
  • Creating work groups with Mendeley Desktop.
  • Finding bibliographic references through Mendeley.

Contents:

  • Registering and installing Mendeley Desktop and relevant plugins (Web importer and MS Word plugin);
  • Collecting bibliographic references;
  • Organizing a Mendeley Library;
  • PDF Reader capabilities;
  • Building citations and bibliographies;
  • Creating Work Groups;
  • Searching for bibliographic references.

 

TRAINING SESSION: TURNITIN, A TOOL TO PREVENT PLAGIARISM (SCHEDULE DATES YET TO BE DEFINED)

  • Duration: 1 h.
  • Target public: Professors and Researchers.
  • Pre-requisites: for the Moodle approach in this session it is necessary that the Professor or Researcher is already registered at the platform and have at least one lecture associated.
  • Minimum / Maximum of participants: 10 to 20..

General goals: the general purpose of this training session if to ensure that professors and researchers understand Turnitin’s efficacy as an important resource to support teaching, whether through its pedagogical usage with undergraduate students, or as a tool to detect and prevent academic plagiarism.

  • How to create a Turnitin account;
  • Creating an Activity;
  • Configuring an Activity;
  • Turnitin Web – a space for Master and PhD tutoring;
  • Pedagogical vs. Plagiarism Detection approach;
  • Turnitin Moodle – a space for pedagogical approach;
  • How can students submit their papers?
  • Visualizing and interpreting a Turnitin report.
