The scientific area of Linguistics at Nova University of Lisboa was created in 1975, which would lead to the creation of the Linguistics Section of NOVA FCSH. The Department of Linguistic Studies (now the Department of Linguistics) was established in 1987/1988.

The training offer of the Linguistics Department includes courses of 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles and a postgraduate degree in e-learning, in addition to other courses (nondegree courses).

It is also the responsibility of the Department of Linguistics to teach all disciplines in the area of Language Sciences that integrate other 1st Cycle courses (Languages, Literatures and Modern Cultures, Portuguese Studies, Translation, Communication Sciences) and 2nd cycle (Interdepartmental Master’s in Teaching, Text Editing, Translation) of NOVA FCSH.

The Department of Linguistics also offers training in Courses in partnership with other institutions, such as the PhD in Translation and Terminology (with the University of Aveiro) and the PhD in Didactics of Languages – Multilingualism and Education for Global Citizenship, under b-learning (with the Open University).
