Doctorate in Sociology, associate professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Director of the National Observatory of Gender and Violence, and researcher at CICS.NOVA (FCSH-UNL), where he led more than 25 research projects over the last decades in the areas of violence against women, domestic and gender violence, some of them pioneer in Portugal and in the European context. He is the author of several books and articles on these subjects. He is also the coordinator of the Master’s in Sociology and in Women Studies at FCSH-UNL.
International expert of the Council of Europe within the Task Force to Combat Violence Against Women, including Domestic Violence and of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), and a member of the Technical and Scientific Council of the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality in Portugal.
