The Department of Philosophy has existed since 1980, the year in which the Degree in Philosophy began. That same year, the master’s degree in Philosophy was also launched, the first one in Portugal. This led to the Department of Philosophy having formed many of NOVA’s philosophy teachers, but also of other Portuguese universities. In the last 30 years, the Branch of Educational Training in Philosophy has also allowed the formation of successive generations of secondary school teachers.

The Department of Philosophy of Nova is proud to have had in its staff, throughout all these years great professors of philosophy such as Fernando Gil, José Gil, or Maria Filomena Molder.
