Saul Martinez Bermejo, Ph.D. in History from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2009), was awarded a postdoctoral scholarship of the Marie Curie Programme (Intra-European Fellowship - IEF, FP7-PEOPLE-2010-IEF), which will allow him to develop, for two years, his research project at the Overseas History Research Centre (CHAM - Centro de História de Além-Mar), from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH/NOVA) and the University of the Azores. This is the first scholarship of its kind in FCSH and one of the few so far awarded in the field of social sciences and humanities in Portugal.

Entitled "Classics Empire», the research project of Saul Martinez aims to study the influence the Greco-Roman Antiquity exercised in how the Portuguese perceived and classified the non-European realities during the XV to XVII centuries. Although the focus is on the Portuguese case, it is a survey with a strong transnational and comparative orientation, confronting the Portuguese and Spanish cases, English and Dutch. Furthermore, although this research fits in the area of history, the approach to be developed has a truly interdisciplinary nature.

During his stay at FCSH, Saul Martinez will have the scientific guidance of Pedro Cardim and Jean-Frédéric Schaub, both from CHAM.

Advanced methods for bell tuning and carillon restoration.

The basilica of Mafra is a major work of the baroque, both in Portugal as in Europe. Mafra carillons are a pair of outstanding musical instruments. Together, they represent the largest surviving 18th century carillon in Europe. Their recuperation deserves now a special scientific consideration, since it is a historical collection of bells which must be dealt with careful preservation methods. Its tuning must be non-destructive, and comply with scientific criterion of both musical acoustics and musicological concerns.

This research project involves a scientific approach for the tuning and restoration of the carillons, based on both physics-acoustics and musicological advanced methods. A break-through in physics and in musicology, this project will also benefit the importance of an invaluable cultural heritage which has been neglected for decades mostly for the lack of technical and musicological solutions. Both towers of Mafra possess 18th century automatic playing mechanisms (rotating barrel with pegs and levers) that make possible the performance of old melodies. The recovery of a very important cultural heritage and of a unique tool for historical music performance seems at hand.

Research team includes scientists from three institutions: Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (headed by João Soeiro de Carvalho), Instituto Tecnológico e Núclear (headed by José Antunes), and Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo do Porto (headed by Octávio Inácio). Funding is provided by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia)

Among the numerous features of the website, it’s possible to browse through the manuscripts, to access the miniatures from Cancioneiro da Ajuda, or to explore and listen to a long list of songs put to music, both from interpretations of the original music preserved, as from contemporary versions or compositions inspired by the medieval texts. In many cases, the songs are accompanied by their respective musical scores.

The songs edited text also provides extensive information to help and complement the reading as a glossary, notes on the verses, reading notes, formal data, place names, anthroponomy, historical background and general notes. The database also includes brief information about all the authors and several search features. In the website is also available the "Arte de Trovar", the little poetic treaty, of unknown authorship, on troubadour poetry, transcribed in the beginning of one of the manuscripts (the“Cancioneiro” kept in Portugal National Library)
An English version of part of the website will be available soon.

The website "Cantigas Medievais" is the result of the research project "Littera", funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), in collaboration with the Portuguese National Library, and based in IEM-FCSH (Institute of Medieval Studies).

The Grimm Brothers Today: Kinder- und Hausmärchen and Its Legacy, 200 Years After

June 21st through 23rd, 2012 - Lisbon

Organizing Committee: Francisco Vaz da Silva
grimm2012lisbon@gmail.com

Since 1812 the Grimm Brothers’ Kinder- und Hausmärchen (KHM), translated in dozens of languages and read by children and adults everywhere, became the quintessential book of fairy tales. It also provided an enduring, if controversial, paradigm for folktale studies. As the bicentenary of the publication of KHM approaches, we invite scholars to appraise its significance today. We call for papers on all aspects of the Grimms’ tales and their legacy, from a number of distinct perspectives.

The symposium includes the following panels:

Brothers Grimm and their European contemporaries (convened by Sadhana Naithani, Associate Professor, Centre of German Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi);

Fairy tale and genre in a post-Grimm era (convened by Donald Haase, Associate Dean and Professor of German, Wayne State University, Detroit);

Filmic Adaptations of the Grimm Fairy Tales (convened by Jack Zipes, Professor Emeritus of German and Comparative Literature, University of Minnesota);

KHM at the intersection of learned tradition and popular literature, art and folk narrative (convened by Christine Shojaei Kawan, Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen and Arbeitsstelle Enzyklopädie des Märchens);

Metamorphosis as metaphor: Transformative magic in the Grimms' KHM (convened by Maria Tatar, John L. Loeb Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures, Harvard University);

Who Owns the Fairy Tales? Heritage, copyright, and the Grimm legacy (convened by Valdimar Hafstein, Associate Professor of Folkloristics, University of Iceland).
