First Portuguese Archaeological Mission in the United Arab Emirates

A team of archaeologists from the Institute for Archaeology and Palaeosciences carries out excavations in the ancient Portuguese fortress of Quelba.

Folowing the invitation of the Emir Sheikh Sultan III bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, of the Emirate of Sharjah, a team from the Institute for Archaeology and Palaeosciences (IAP) is to perform archaeological work in the United Arab Emirates, in the former Portuguese fortress of Quelba. This will be the first archaeological mission undertaken by an entirely Portuguese team in the Arabian Peninsula, a zone frequented by the Portuguese in the 16th century.

The archaeologists, teachers, students and former students of NOVA FCSH are directed by Rui Carita, Rosa Varela Gomes and Mário Varela Gomes. All travel at the invitation of the local authorities, which cover all the expenses of the investigation.
