National Candidacy for Access to Undergraduate Programmes

The application for public undergraduate programmes is done annually through a national candidacy organized by the Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior (DGES).

Conditions for access

To be a candidate you must:

- Hold a secondary education degree or equivalent;

- Perform or have performed, during the last two years, the national exams corresponding to the entrance exams required for the different courses and institutions;

- Perform the prerequisites if they are required by the institution for the course that you are applying for.

For each institution / course combination, a mark of 9.5 or higher must be obtained in each entry exam as well as the application.

Applicants can apply for three different phases of the candidacy.

However, students placed during the 1st phase who then apply for the 2nd phase and are placed, have their 1st phase placement automatically canceled and therefore their registration and enrollment canceled as well.

Similarly, students placed in the 1st or 2nd phases that then apply to the 3rd phase and are placed, have their previous placement automatically canceled and their registration and enrollment canceled as well.

During the 1st phase of the national candidacy the places set for each course in each higher education institution are distributed between a general quota and special categories:

- Candidates coming from the Azores

- Candidates coming from Madeira

- Portuguese emigrants and family residing with them

- Military Candidates under contract

- Candidates with physical and sensory disabilities

During the 2nd and 3rd phases there is only one category.

Candidates who have finished their secondary education courses in a school system other than the Portuguese can apply for Portuguese public undergraduate programs by means of foreign exams. These candidates should consult the necessary information at DGES, as well as specific legislation.

For information regarding eligibility, please also refer to the International Student page.
