The ways in which space is organized, experienced, represented and created, are reflections of power relations and hegemonic discourses. This relationship between space and power has a fundamental role in the creation and reproduction of social inequalities.

This seminar will be focused on the geographical approach to social inclusion strategies.

Challenges and opportunities of the geographies of inclusion will be discussed by representatives of the academic world, the civil society and the Portuguese central government.

The Portuguese Secretary of State for Equality, Elza Pais, and the President of the Portuguese Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality, Sara Hawk Casaca will be present.

Gill Valentine, Head of the School of Geography, University of Leeds, will give the opening lecture.

The seminar is organized by e-GEO – Research Centre for Geography and Regional Planning, FCSH-UNL and IGC - Committee for Citizenship and Gender Equality.

Admission is free.
