The history of ideas, putting together the perspectives of History, Philosophy and Literary Studies, is the basis of CHC's main project.
We question the meanings of representations and doctrines, considering their historicity. One does not separate practice, images and reasons, as they aren't a reflection of each other, but all are involved in the definition of the meaning one is constructing.
We study political as well as religious, scientific, economic, social, aesthetic and philosophical thought and practice, emphasizing the modern, con
temporary Portuguese space and its connection with the Iberian, Brazilian and Latin-American space and the study of the forms of expressing and transmitting ideas.

Strategic Plan 2015-2020

The strategic project on "Frontiers" with which we present ourselves to the period 2015-2020 was assumed in a new institutional framework in which the CHC, the Centro de História d'Além Mar (CHAM), the Centro de Estudos Históricos (CEH) and the Instituto Oriental (IO) join efforts and teams, pursuing and renewing programmes and where the four research units decide to merge.
The new research unit that results from this process, Centre for Global History (CHAM) is currently in process of constitution, with the teams already working together.
