Map Collection

The Mapoteca (Map collection) of the Geography and Regional Planning Department has a remarkable collection of cartography (basic and thematic) produced by different institutions, in several editions and scales, covering the national territory, as well as much of the former colonial territories. These documents are essential in teaching and research activities in several scientific fields of Nova School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm and from 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.00 am to 12.30 am and from 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm

Mission:

  1. To make available cartographic information to students and academic staff within Nova School of Social Sciences and Humanities Departments and Reserch Units;
  2. To manage the use of resources by Nova School of Social Sciences and Humanities students and academic staff;
  3. To release the existing collection;
  4. To increase the online interaction;
  5. To best serve the community.


Resources:
Currently, the map collection is organized, inventoried and available in a digital catalogue. All charts are identified by theme and scale.

Collections in paper format:
- Portuguese military charts, on the scale of 1:25 000 (national coverage)
- Portuguese Agriculture and Forestry charts, on the scale of 1:25 000 (partial coverage)
- Portuguese Land Use Capability charts, on the scale of 1:50 000 (partial coverage)
- Portuguese soils charts, on the scale of 1: 50 000 (partial coverage)
- Portuguese chorography charts, on the scale of 1:50 000 and 1:100 000 (national coverage)
- Geological maps of Portugal, on the scale of 1:50 000 (partial coverage)

Maps:
- Wall Maps, photographed and stored in .jpeg format
- Portuguese-speaking countries charts, partial coverage

Other resources:
- Aerial photographs. The scales are around the 1:15 k, the dates of the flights are from the 80's;
- Collections of thematic cartography (Atlas of the Environment, etc.).
- Weather reports - Several years;
- Population census regarding 1960, 1970, 1981, 1991 and 2001;
- Agricultural and industrial census - Several years;
- Foreign Trade Statistics - Several years.
